About Everest Day 2022

NRNA NZ is partnering with all Nepali Community Organisations in New Zealand and the Himalayan Trust to organize the ‘Everest Day 2022’ event in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Hamilton, Christchurch, Invercargill, and Wellington. The celebration of Everest day is an initiative to commemorate the anniversary of the remarkable first ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal.

This event is an opportunity to recognize the friendship between New Zealand and Nepal forged at the Top of the World 69 years ago and explore areas of common interest in the mountaineering & tourism sector. Every year, the NRNA New Zealand celebrates this event as one of our annual calendar’s key events and festivals.

NRNA NZ is a non-profit charitable organization registered under the patronage of Sir Edmund Hillary in 2005. NRNZ NZ started to observe Everest day in 2014 on an annual basis to remember the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

NRNA celebrated the anniversary in Christchurch in 2016 & 2018- all other events were observed in Auckland.

Peter Hillary, Peter Cammell, Mike Allsop, Dean Staples, Guy Cotter, Mark Inglis, Dave Mckinley, Lydia Brady, Scott Simper, Mark Sedan, Mark Whetu, Mark Woodward, Mike Roberts, Steve Moffat, Clive Jones, Ankaji Sherpa have participated in these events on several occasions in the past.

While observing Everest Day:

  • Promote the importance of this historic day and raise awareness among all New Zealanders, and friendship between the two great Nations Nepal and New Zealand.
  • We want to express our respect to all mountaineers
  • Appreciate all climbers with various outstanding records
  • After climbing Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary did not forget the Everest Region. He initiated the Himalayan Trust to help Sherpas who live on and around the Everest region by providing Education, Health & Awareness through the trust. This event is also to appreciate his contributions to the people of Nepal
  • Everest Day is Observed to promote Trekking, Climbing, Tourism & bilateral relationship between NZ & Nepal.
  • Last year, 200 people attended the events organized in two cities, Auckland and Wellington, and this year we are expecting 1500 New Zealanders to participate in the events organized at six different venues.
  • We are promoting Everest Day as a Nepali community, and all New Zealanders to start taking ownership of Everest Day to make it a national event through the Government initiative.
  • This year we want to highlight Everest Day through media campaigning.
